New legislation in New South Wales has been introduced recently to increase the safety of swimming pools. Some of the important points to take note of are:

• All pool owners will be required to join a statewide pool registry by 29 October 2013. This register will be up and running by 29 April 2013.
• Swimming pool owners will be required to provide a valid swimming pool compliance certificate before being able to sell or lease a property with a pool.
• There will be mandatory inspections of pools used in apartment complexes and visitor type accommodation.

Penalties will apply where an owner fails to register a pool or where an owner falsely certifies that the pool complies with the relevant laws.
