How can you improve your apartment building’s environmental sustainability?
Since the stone ages, our awareness of the damage being caused to the planet by our everyday household tasks has definitely increased. Let’s take a look at how you could improve your green footprint within your strata apartment building and save some wasted pennies on over used consumables.
As we are approaching the cooler months of the year, a warm shower or bath is amongst our priority list when we come home from being out and about all day. However, did you know that water heating alone contributes to approximately 20% of our annual energy use? Switching to a solar powered hot water system is not only a much more environmentally sustainable alternative, it can also save an estimated 50% of your annual water heating energy usage.
As our population is continuing to increase, our waste disposal system is under more pressure than ever. Composting is slowly becoming a more commonly used tool for recycling our unwanted food scraps and giving us some extra room in our garbage bags. The benefits of setting up a communal compost wastage enclosure includes reducing landfill waste, providing a home to all of those unwanted food scraps and of course, increasing your environmental sustainability.
The use of excessive lighting is a key contributing factor to our electricity consumption and high bills. Have you noticed certain lights in and around your building which are constantly switched on? If these frequently used lights are powered by Incandescent and/or Halogen bulbs, it is worth enquiring about changing to an LED lighting system. Not only is LED lighting more durable, environmentally friendly and faster switching, it will also save approximately 75% of your annual lighting energy consumption.
